World Day for Captive Dolphins

Today, 4th July, is the World Day for Captive Dolphins. I strongly believe that dolphins do not belong in captivity and, despite efforts by some dolphinaria to improve conditions for the animals they exhibit, in my opinion their welfare is severely compromised. Innovative projects such as the WDC and Sea Life Trust Beluga Sanctuary, which will rehome two captive belugas to a sanctuary in Iceland, give me hope that captive cetaceans will not have to live out the rest of their lives in swimming pools.

Tramuntana Dolphins

I am very excited to be returning to Cap de Creus, Catalonia this summer to participate in the Tramuntana Dolphins project with SUBMON. I joined them as a volunteer last year and learnt a lot about at sea surveys and photo ID and I’m looking forward to doing more of the same this year. Let’s hope the winds are in our favour and that the dolphins are ready to be photographed!
